Regular garden volunteers recently gathered for Christmas drinks at Milson Park and celebrated another year of successful community gardening. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful community garden with generous support from North Sydney Council and the local community. Of course, each of our volunteer’s weekly contribution is priceless!
Earlier this year we completed rebuilding all inside beds with great support and assistance from the council and volunteers. We continue to grow a wide range of vegetables, herbs and companion flowers organically. Some of the new plants we have grown successfully this year include Turmerics, Asparagus and Garlics which all took several months before harvesting but rewarding.
As summer arrives the outside bed keeps producing a giant zucchini or two as well as normal ones every week! Inside the garden Gem squash (similar to zucchini but in a round shape) grow prolifically. I am glad that we saved seeds from our first Gem squash harvest last season! We have also just began to harvest Potatoes, planted in July and August, while leafy vegetables such as Lettuce, Silverbeet, Mizuna and Cress are rapidly growing to fill other beds. Seeds of Purple King and Snake beans and Cucumbers have been planted recently and they are all growing well.
During the festive season we continue to work in the garden as the growth of plants is rapid and we need maintenance and harvesting on a weekly basis. So, there will be a Sunday gardening on 24 and 31 December and 7 January from 10am.
Please also note the garden gates will be temporarily locked from Friday 29 December and reopened Tuesday 2 January except when attended by our volunteers. Therefore, please do not leave any composting materials inside the gates during this time.
We wish you all a happy Christmas, safe holidays and healthy and peaceful new year!!
Many thanks and best wishes.
